IBM is supporting joint work with CERCS and Imperial College London towards developing autonomic componentized software overlays. The research focuses on development of new techniques and associated infrastructure support for creating self-adaptive -- autonomic -- distributed sets of software components. Such adaptation is not only essential for the creation of robust systems that adjust to changing environments or needs, but is also fundampental for component re-use -- components need to adapt automatically to their context of use, so that programmers don't have to break abstraction boundaries to do so explicitly. The project addresses the needs of both enterprise infrastructures like Websphere, as well as infrastructures used in the high performance computing environment.
