CERCS received a substantial equipment gift from Intel Corporation, in the form of 12 dual-core machines, used for educational and research purposes. This award resulted in new dual-core Intel machines being available to ECE and CoC researchers in Computer Architecture, Operating Systems, and high performance computing. With this award, CERCS is establishing a Virtualization and Multi-core Systems Laboratory, housed in both CoC and ECE facilities and in part, operated jointly with the GTISC security research center. The laboratory's purpose is to investigate the domain of future multi-core and server systems, with topics ranging from scalable hypervisors for heterogeneous multi-core systems, to online management for server platforms (including reliability and power management), to trust and security models for distributed systems. Donated machines are available both as 'hack machines' for hypervisor and kernel development and as workstations accessible for research and educational purposes.
