IBM Research Austin
Posting date: 3/1/10

Position Description: IBM Research - Austin has an open intern position for Summer 2010 in the area of memory power management. An ideal candidate would be a PhD student with research experience involving a mix of memory system design, power management, system software (OS/hypervisor), and power-performance modeling (using simulation and/or real-system experimentation).

Project Description: Memory sub-system power and performance are key bottlenecks to future computing growth. In large commercial servers, the memory power budget already exceeds the processor power budget, making it the most power-hungry component. The continued growth in per-socket core counts and increasing use of virtualization are expected to make the problem even worse. Tiered memory, i.e., memory systems consisting of either a mix of memory technologies (such as PCM & DRAM) or DRAMs placed in different power-performance modes, is an attractive option to address the memory power wall. However, before tiered memory can be practically exploited to reduce system power, many challenges need to be overcome involving all parts of the memory management hierarchy (hardware, firmware, operating system, runtime, and even applications). We are studying hardware, firmware and operating system enhancements that will enable energy-efficient tiered memory architecture. Experiments will be performed using realistic workloads on IBM's latest server platforms, in addition to using simulation to model and evaluate solutions with future-generation technologies. Strong emphasis will be placed on having the outcome of the work published in a top-tier research venue.

Background: The Power Aware Systems Department at IBM Research - Austin is at the forefront of energy management technologies driving IBM platforms and datacenter solutions. This project will serve to extend our advances in creating next-generation, energy-aware firmware and system software technologies.

Interested students contact schwan at cc.

ABOUT THE SUSTAINABILITY FELLOWSHIP
People at PARC are passionate about engaging in sustainable practices and applying technology toward positive environmental and social change. The Sustainability Fellowship intersects these two passions. The Sustainability Fellowship began as a grassroots initiative by dedicated employees. PARC reduces its own carbon footprint where possible, and then offsets the remainder, by funding this unique fellowship program. The goal is to support education-by devoting those same offset funds to help invent a sustainable future.

Google, Seattle Systems Lab
Posting date: 1/27/2008

I'm happy to invite the strongest PhD candidates to apply for a summer internship position at Google's Seattle Systems Lab. Over the last ten years, the most amazing systems engineers and researchers at Google have built the world's largest systems running the most innovative systems software (http://research.google.com/pubs/papers.html). And now, Google is doing it in Seattle, with computer scientists like Craig Chambers, Marvin Theimer, Preston Briggs, Yatin Chawathe, Theo Vassilakis, Dave Hanson, myself, and many others at Google in the Northwest.

Systems PhD students, especially those whose research areas touch on programming systems (including compilers, runtime, multicore, program analysis), operating systems and distributed systems, are invited to submit a single PDF file that includes a cover letter, one page thesis description, and CV. Email to bershad+intern2008 at google.com by March 15, 2008 with the subject line "internship." The earlier the better, as decisions can be made before the deadline. Students in at least their second year are particularly encouraged to apply.

All students interested in a more general internship at Google, in Seattle and elsewhere, can find information at http://www.google.com/jobs/students/intern.

Come to Google. Make friends. Do research. Have impact.
